Overview

Kinetic Timeline is a Power BI custom visual providing a scrollable day-strip slicer for filtering report data by date and time. It defaults to the current day plus the next four. Selecting a single day reveals a within-day time-of-day range slider. The timeline emits a standard Power BI filter that scopes every visual on the page, including the Kinetic Map.

Download

Download the latest .pbiviz file from the latest release on the Kinetic releases repository, then import it into Power BI (see Installation below). The release page always carries the current version of Kinetic Timeline.

You can also browse all releases or the sample reports in the repository.

Installation

From Microsoft AppSource

  1. In Power BI Desktop or the Power BI Service, open the visual gallery and select Get more visuals.
  2. Search for Kinetic Timeline and click Add.

From a .pbiviz file

  1. Download the .pbiviz file from the latest release.
  2. In Power BI Desktop, go to Insert → Get more visuals → Import a visual from a file.
  3. Select the downloaded .pbiviz file and click Open.

Data fields

Field well Description
Date The date or date/time column to filter on. Bind the same column used in the Kinetic Map’s Date field well to keep both visuals in sync.

Using the timeline

  • Scroll the day strip left or right to navigate to any date range.
  • Click a single day to select it; the report filters to that day.
  • Click and drag across multiple days to select a contiguous range.
  • With a single day selected and a Kinetic license active, a time-of-day range slider appears below the strip — drag its handles to filter within the day by hour.
  • Fit to data (Format pane → Timeline card) anchors the initial view to the earliest date in your dataset rather than today.

Licensing

Free features include the scrollable day strip, multi-day selection, High Contrast color scheme, and standard Power BI date filtering.

The following require a Kinetic license:

  • Within-day time-of-day range slider
  • Color scheme selection (Steel, Forest, Slate, Earth, and military branch themes)
  • Custom color overrides

To enter your license key, open the visual’s Format pane in Power BI and locate the License card. Paste your key (format: KIN-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX) into the License Key field.

Common issues

Timeline shows today’s date but my data is historical

Enable Fit to data in the Format pane under the Timeline card. This anchors the initial view to the earliest date present in your dataset.

No dates visible after binding the Date field

Confirm the bound column is a Power BI date or date/time type (not a text column). If data is entirely in the past and Fit to data is off, the strip defaults to today — scroll left or enable Fit to data.

Time-of-day slider not appearing

The slider appears only when (1) a single day is selected, (2) the Time of Day card is enabled in the Format pane, and (3) a valid Kinetic license is active.

License key not accepted

Ensure the key is entered exactly as issued (format: KIN-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX) with no leading or trailing spaces. Keys are case-insensitive. Contact support if the issue persists.
